These paintings are all developed from ‘found’ snapshots, places I haven’t been to myself, so that the final image becomes in some way not quite real. I often digitally manipulate the initial photograph, cropping it, altering the colour balance, and then frequently use drawings and studies to develop something slightly different again.  Sometimes, as in ‘Overcasting’, I will combine two or more initial snapshots. Each of these paintings is created across quite long periods of time, as during the process I find that I’m drawn to explore different aspects or angles of the initial source image. I often find they have a somewhat dream-like atmosphere, and can convey a particular feeling which I was only dimly aware of when I started to work on the image.
