For this series of landscape paintings I moved between representation and abstraction. I used a mixture of sketchbook paintings and drawings, photographs and my recollections of the experience of being out in the landscape to create them. I often worked on a pair of paintings simultaneously as this created a dialogue between the two of them and facilitated greater spontaneity in the brushstrokes and mark-making.
Most of these paintings were created over several days, sometimes longer, and they are built up of multiple layers, with a lot of sanding/wiping/scraping back to allow previous marks and colours to come through. I use acrylic paint and some acrylic inks, and a variety of techniques including flicking, wiping, sgraffito, stencilling and printing with paint, and a number of tools, including brushes, palette knives, sticks and other natural materials and my hands.
I hope to capture not only the colours and shapes of the landscape, but also something of the sensations, feelings and memories associated with particular places and times.
